Integrate to innovate

I once read, “If you want to go fast go alone, if you want to go far go together”. A saying that sticks with me because it fits with how we develop our solutions at Epona Legal. We build our DMS on the widely available Office 365 suite and let our other applications integrate with almost every other software applications that helps our customers be more productive.

There is a lot of discussion about the choices legal professionals need to make when it comes to software. Do you want a best of breed or a best of suite solution? For those not familiar with the terms: do you want an assembly of tools best suited for each individual task (i.e. a separate DMS, timekeeping tool, CRM, financial administration) or do you want all functionalities in one central application from one supplier.

Changing needs
Here’s why this discussion is important: the business needs of your organisation might change over time. That means that when you choose a fully integrated suite, you’re stuck with this all-in one solution and can’t easily change individual parts of the application to better fit your needs. This means that the choice you make today, might limit your choices in the next 3 to 4 years.

Now, if you (unlike me) have a crystal ball and can say for sure that your current choices fit the way you work in the future an all-in-software solution is the way to go. However, if you need to be more flexible and willing to work with separate tools developed for the job, but in a connected and integrated way, a best of breed solution might fit you better. Integration gives you the flexibility to innovate on individual parts of your IT.

We advise, you decide
Like I said, at Epona Legal we are constantly working on new integrations and improving existing integrations with software from a diverse number of suppliers and partners. This in order to serve our customers’ needs for them to be able to use a best of breed toolset to run their law firm or legal department. We let them decide (or consult them) which tools fits their processes best. By operating in this manner they can use a practice management solution from one provider and use our SharePoint based DMSforLegal for document management which is fully integrated.
